Deconstructing U.S. rhetorical features: Toward a more pluralistic U.S. academic discourse. $49.99 The purpose of this two-part study is to deconstruct the current rhetorical paradigm of the US in order to reach a "rhetorical consciousness" from which point it will be clear what rhetorical patterns impede a more pluralistic academic discourse in the US. The first part of the study will use the theories of deconstruction and contrastive rhetoric (CR) are used to provide a foundation for a more inclusive rhetorical consciousness. The second part of the study will evaluate the progress of five post-graduate linguistically and culturally diverse (LCD) students enrolled in an elective writing class at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Progress will be reviewed through student questionnaires, interviews, and self-evaluative essays as well as through professor evaluations of students' Book Reviews and Literature Reviews. Instructor questionnaires will be used to elicit the preferences that US evaluators have for academic writing. A final recommendation will be made in support of cross-cultural composition pedagogy. |
